A football club with an average player age of 21, Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ, defeated Kocaelispor 2-0 on Saturday to clinch the championship in the Turk Telekom League A, an achievement that grants the Gençlerbirliği reserve team a place in the Turkcell Super League next season.
Two first half headers by Ümit Tütünci and Remzi Giray Kaçar gave Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ their 11th home win this season, helping them maintain their undefeated run in home games all season. With one week to go, the Ankara team has 66 points from 33 games, four ahead of second-placed Istanbul Municipality. Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ boasts the league's strongest defense conceding only 25 goals, which led them to the league title despite scoring a relatively modest 46 goals.
Two promotions in two seasons:
This was the second successive season Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ's are promoted, as the team finished second in the playoff group in Iddaa League B in the 2005-2006 season, which summarizes the team's rapid evolution in the last five years.
Turkcell Super League team Gençlerbirliği chairman İlhan Cavcav bought ASAŞSpor in 2003 when they were faced with a financial crisis and changed the club's name to Gençlerbirliği ASAŞSpor. Later on the name changed to its present name following a sponsorship deal with OFTAŞ.
Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ is in a manner the official Gençlerbirliği reserve team and every OFTAŞ player is contracted to Gençlerbirliği with loan status. For example, this year's Turkcell Super League star Mehmet Çakır of Gençlerbirliği was playing for OFTAŞ last year.
Recently, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) declared that there was no rule to oppose Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ to play in Turkcell Super League, as long as they have a different board from that of Gençlerbirliği. Cavcav has foreseen the legal barrier and separated the two club boards, and let Turgay Kalemci be the chairman of "Gençlerbirliği Junior."
Super league club for sale:
It is reported that Cavcav is preparing to sell the club, which he bought for YTL 15,000 four years ago, with supposed investors including Fortis Bank, Mardinspor chairman Süleyman Bölünmez and investors from İzmir who think the Aegean city should be represented in the Super League with at least one team. A possible sale to Fortis Bank will make Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ the first example of a Turkish football club owned by a foreign company.
However, Cavcav recently denied the stories saying, "As I am the parent chairman of the club, I never talked about the sale and I did not receive any offers."
Cavcav asserted that Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ would not be sold and show that they could be successful with players coming up from the academy. "Winning the championship with players whose prices range around YTL 25,000-75,000 showed that Gençlerbirliği is the best team in Turkey."
