Former Central Coast Mariners midfielder Mile Jedinak is one game closer to his dream of being selected for Australia’s 2010 World Cup squad to travel to South Africa after being called up to face Uzbekistan next month in Sydney.
Jedinak, who quit the A-League to join Turkish side Genclerbirligi in a bid to enhance his prospects of Socceroos selection, told The World Game that the possibility of playing at the World Cup next year gave him “goosebumps”.
But the 24-year-old, who has fit seamlessly into the Ankara club’s starting line-up since making the move from Gosford in the January transfer window, cautioned against his own – and team – over-confidence.
“If I get picked for the squad in 2010 it will mean everything,” Jedinak declared. “It’ll mean the world, to be honest.
“Playing at a World Cup is something I’ve dreamed of my whole life and if I was to get even a slight taste of that, it would be indescribable. It’s the pinnacle.
“The World Cup is obviously the biggest stage in football and to be a part of that, representing your country, it gives you goosebumps just to speak about it, let alone if you were to actually be a part of it.”
Jedinak has already played eight times for Genclerbirligi in his brief time at the club and should see some game time against Uzbekistan in the Stadium Australia clash on April 1 in Vince Grella’s absence.
“One step at a time,” Jedinak warned.
“We still have to quality first and then Pim will have a lot of tough decisions to make. All you can be doing at that time is playing regularly, playing well, and consistently.”
That is something Jedinak and his fellow countrymen at Genclerbirligi, James Troisi and Bruce Djite, have managed to do.
“I hope all three of us will be selected. What better way than to go to a World Cup?
“We’ve been at this club together and then to share the World Cup together would be unbelievable. Fingers crossed”
Jedinak has impressed at Genclerbirligi since his switch in January, hitting the headlines with a game-winning goal from a free-kick against Istanbul giants Fenerbahce that turned his team’s season around.
“It was a lucky goal, I know that,” he admitted.
“It was a massive game for us. We knew that if everyone played well, we’d give them a crack and we did.
“I was more stoked that we won rather than me scoring. If anyone had scored, if Bruce had scored, I would have been just as happy.”
